The cow barn was built in 2009 by Frederic Brillant, a French carpenter living on Vashon Island. It is constructed in a timber frame manner of Doug fir with no nails in its structure, only black locust pegs to hold the large beams together. When deciding if I should have a barn built for the cows, I consulted an experienced dairyman. He asked me who the barn was for, my answer was the cows of course. He corrected me that in fact the barn was for myself. I now sleep better every winter knowing the cows are dry and comfortable.
